The Courthouse Timoleague
Bishop McKenna of Ross visited Timoleague in 1785 and noted that there were twenty five “unreclaimed Whiteboys” in the parish. In the period 1820-23 there were many Whiteboy outbreaks all over the country and they even attacked troops at the Pass of Keimaneigh between BAllingeary and Bantry and also at Tirelton near Macroom.
Five men were hanged at Tierlton. Daniel O ‘Connell made a dramatic intervention to save Whiteboys from the gallows in Doneraile in North Cork. A man was murdered at Timoleague fair and a Whiteboy was accused of it. Daniel O’Connell appeared at the Courthouse in Mill Street (building opposite Dillons’ Restaurant) to defend him and probably saved him from the gallows as he did the Whiteboys who were accused of murder in the “Doneraile Conspiracy”.
Today, the Courthouse function is as a Co-Working Space and Bed and Breakfast.
