Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Church of the Nativity of th Blessed Virgin Mary was opened on 12th September 1912. Built within sight of it predecessor, St Mary’s, the church was the first in the region to be designed in the Hiberno-Rosmanesque style. The round bell tower was added later in 1931.
The church is most famous for its Harry Clarke stained glass windows over the main entrance and its Oppenheimer mosaics at and around the alter. A copy of the Timoleague Chalice which was found in Cape Clear Island is displayed here.
It is a striking example of Hiberno-Romanesque Revival architecture, designed by Cork’s Michael Hennessy in 1880 and brought to life starting in 1907. Known for its cruciform layout and distinctive round tower, the church’s polychromatic exterior showcases exceptional craftsmanship in its detailed window and door surrounds.
Visitors are treated to an impressive array of mosaics and stained glass. The north-eastern window reflects an English Gothic style, while the south-western window was crafted by Harry Clarke Studios, adding a layer of artistry that continues to captivate. This architectural and artistic gem embodies the spirit of Timoleague, making it an essential stop for history and art enthusiasts alike.
